A little about the history of Cambridge

The city of Cambridge OH was founded in 1803 and it was named after Cambridge, MD. It started out with some geographic and commercial advantages with its location along a road known as Zanes Trace and a ferry that was established back in 1798, not long after the founding of America. Cambridge quickly developed into a trade center and persuaded several industries to locate there in the 1800s, bringing more employment to the area.

History still lives on in the streets of Cambridge

Cambridge OH today has a historic district that attracts visitors who want to see buildings originally built in the mid-to-late 1800s. You can take a walk down Wheeling Avenue, which was once the historic National Road, and explore a variety of home decor and antique shops. The area has a restored marketplace that includes historical museums, an art market, a theater, coffee and candy shops and delightful, locally-owned restaurants.

Cambridge is the home of an internationally renowned glass company

The world-famous Cambridge Glass Company created quality glassware beginning in 1902 and continued all the way until 1958. There is now a National Museum of Cambridge Glass that showcases the artfully produced glassware products made by this historic glass company. Visitors can come to the museum and see some of the more than 6,000 pieces of eminently collectible glassware. If you appreciate craftsmanship, this is worth the visit.

Take a tour of the museum and re-visit glassware history

The glass museum also includes a unique "Cambridge Glass Goes Hollywood" exhibit and features original factory items that were rescued from the factory before it was demolished. Some of the factory items you can see include doors, etching plates, and shelving. For glassware connoisseurs and just about anyone who appreciates local history, a visit to the National Museum of Cambridge Glass is a very special trip down memory lane.

Some of the best places to visit in Cambridge

Cambridge is also the home of other fascinating museums and attractions. Visit the Hopalong Cassidy Museum, a tribute to a cowboy named Hopalong Cassidy, a TV hero of children's westerns in the 1950s. You might also want to visit the Guernsey County History Museum, the Stone House Museum and in warmer weather, take your family to the Living Word Outdoor Drama, a nationally-recognized re-creation of the passion of Jesus Christ.

Some top local landmarks and restaurants

In addition to the museums and historical features in Cambridge, take time to visit Salt Fork State Park where you can find hiking trails and beautiful scenery. The Living Word amphitheater is a popular landmark during the summer months and the Great Guernsey Trail has biking and a playground for kids. Restaurants and eateries include Kennedy's Bakery, the Guernsey Kitchen and Nothing But Chocolate.

Take time to visit the Georgetown Vineyards and Art Market 649, an intimate art gallery that's located in the historic downtown area. That's where you can see the creativity of local Cambridge artists.
